Directions and defined.

Using the identity as a basis, information will be divided between 3 guides, and other aspects.

The three guides will be Anatomy, Knife guide, and aftercare.

Anatomy-
Smaller of the 3 guides to give a cross section of a knife and show what part of the knife does what and why.

Knife guide-
Giving you the differences between knives and what you would use them for..

Aftercare-
A run down of storage, cleaning, use and sharpening.

Using the initial design guidelines and type, with a combination of subtle shades of colour.

Sourcebook - content

Oblivious to what was actually available at Peter Maturi, a publication as part of the magazine 'progressive housewares' is a training guide covering key basics for all aspects of housewares available. Using my visual style and additional information and knowledge, I can use the training guide to populate the outcomes and not have to devise my own content taking time, while I could be designing.

Identity formed.

From a first knife purchase and initial training, usually the first of what is taught and bought is a selection of 3 key knives in the full range. A cooks knife, paring knife and bread knife are usually the first 3 knives and are the core knifes for a collection. Building a a portion of information will be based around these 3 knives, so why not create an identity around them? I find strapping information or a concept to an identity can direct development much better, and give a little sense of purpose.

After producing work for Peter Maturi previously and feedback given, applying original identity material to new work helps with the understanding of the brand. Above is the original target logo, so development has come from there.

Incorporating the blue colour chosen initially in development of the visual style.

Incorporating the original logo and typeface for PM (century gothic) I feel reflects the brand well.

Outcome development.

Outcome choices

Although with an initial development for a infographic based map/tree compiling information into a single sheet has deemed quite difficult, information into a small amount of space I feel won't benefit the user, and possibly become confusing with the amount displayed. Instead of a single sheet, dividing information between different outcomes and themes to make information much more accessible.

What do I want to explain?

Major issues for when it comes to knives is caring for knives, storing knives, knowing the differences and what does what with knives and why you would buy different models over others.

Scale, stock, format?

information needs to be in print format, and easily manufacturable and cost effective. The continuation of limited colour and production is still considered. leaflet formats I feel would work best for this environment,  anything too technical or advanced paper engineering might not be accessible for the client and consumer in mind.

Directions of information?

To expand usability and functionality, information I think would be best directed at consumers aswell as customers. With a gradual turnover of new staff and refreshers, information would be helpful for members of staff also to have a strong informed direction.

Peter Maturi - Rewritten.

The re-written brief for Peter Maturi. Plenty of clarification for the intent, and feeling much more confident about producing the work.

Outcomes and production.

Packaging wrap

cost effective?
simple to produce?
apply to existing material?
high end quality?
what is its place of application?
how protective does it need to be?

Printed leaflets

Disposable?
Source to keep?
Additional information?
After care?
same/similiar stocks?
limited colour palette?

specific knife packaging

Could/would be a waste?
how protective?
is it necessary?

receipt sleeve

Are they used already?
What information would you apply?
purely decorative?
stocks and decisions?

POS for individual knives.

Defeat object of customer service?
formats and scales?

Demonstration mats

Production costs?
Just a mock-up?
Essential?

Staff training posters/boards

staff room placement?
key facts and information to remember

Knife publication

push the boat out!
who would it be for?
too much work?/not enough time?

Refresh. track back.

consider what has been done before, what I have researched and what direct it is taking.

Designs are coming together, but production and development has stopped. Although this brief hasn't had anywhere near as much attention to it as others, I do want to finish and produce some strong visual pieces of work that reflect my SOI for the module. Okay.. What have I done, where can I take it?

I have-

Developed an initial visual style for information on knives

researched into overprinting techniques and limited colour examples of graphic design that would reflect a strong visual style created.

I have a strong span of knowledge of knives so content wouldn't be an issue.

I have a place to test and demonstrate the working pieces with constructive feedback. (fellow employees and sample customers)

I don't have-

A defined context/placement for the information guide.

Colour scheme decided

dialogue and copy decided

defined areas of information.. after care? sales trainning? customer demonstration/information?

Stocks/processes defined.

I feel with a lot still undecided for the direction of the brief, I need to rewrite what I have, set myself goals and organisation so work is produced.

What do I want from the brief?

Why did I write the brief in the first place

what outcomes and production do I want to include

who is the audience.

context and tone?

The Peter Maturi brief has lost a little direction recently but its still something I want to continue. Reflecting my practice and statement of intent for the module, i feel producing the work will reflect the variety of work i can produce in my portfolio, and form a strong piece of work, but I've lost sight of what is required.

The guide to work as a printed sheet (either digital or screenprint) was always the initial product, but applying the visual style to a further range is possible once the guidelines are in place.

thoughts for further direction include-

Packaging wrap
Printed leaflets
specific knife packaging
receipt sleeve
POS for individual knives.

Tone and context will still be of a similar quirky nature, but careful not to attract the wrong audience (wrong age) I feel I should consider the tone of the store to a certain extent, as a high end cookshop so a certain level of maturity will be required.

Progress Crit. Feedback *

Questions ^^

Notes made while feedback given.

Peter Maturi -

Which colours? are they for a reason?

too busy?

simplify the designs?

don't drown out the text (whats important)

Elbow -

layout of lettering

colour/band

get them on fontographer!

set type size

Consistancy

vary postition? always central?

Beautiful Characters -

Just individual letters on t-shirts?

Try Bc. as the logo on t-shirts - different typefaces?

Range of 26 t-shirts each an individual?

choose typefaces noone has ever heard of?

Initial contextual ideas

Applying the guide designs to a range, originally would be based around a leaflet form/sheet as a handout for customers, and aswell form of packaging, wether or not it could protect the knives to a certain extent, or wrap the knives as they are currently.

Currently at Peter Maturi, when a knife is purchased it is wrapped in tissue paper to identify it is separate from other products for safety reasons and protecting it from other items. The knives have a protective sleeve or box, depending on which product.

With wrapping of some kind, tissue paper or a lighter stock would more than likely used.. to be cost effective and easy to produce on a large scale. Simple colours and print process would make sense. Screenprint on newsprint?

As contextual placement of the information, would certain pieces be on certain forms? after care on the wrap? differences and knife anatomy on a printed leaflet to help purchase?

Knife guide development. *

To see what stage I'm at with potential designs, first compiling what I have will determine what is required to be successful. Obviously there is not dialogue yet, but an initial layout has taken shape on the design to direct the user for different outcomes. This will be a clearer definition when textures and patterns are applied. Unsure on the layout currently, trying to contain what will be alot of information on approximately an a2 sheet (or bigger?, what format?)

Stripes for fully forged knives (one piece of metal) and circles for 2 piece knives. Applying textures and elements to different layers in different colours to create a similar over print technique. (Digital or screenprint?)

The knives in question, vectorised and simplified for the composition, but still containing enough information between each other.

The introduction of type I feel will make or break the composition, aswell as patterns, dividing type styles for different groups of information will add variety (retro styled type I feel allows relaxed grouping of typefaces, but still considered) but at the same time allow for an ease of access to the user.

Colour choices are initial and not considered, two bright colours is what I'm aiming for but not necessarily these two.

** Try printouts, get an idea of scale/format to develop.
