Birthday print presents. *

Print finish considerations. High end or budget? or in between?

As a consideration to print production, I want to create something desirable to own but not be driven by budget. As development continues with the CD cover design, introducing print finish and stocks will be interesting but not essential to the brief. Below are quick examples of spot varnish produced with black foil on black card for subtly to the design. 

These are working well as quick tests and would be nice to include some print including this process, but I also want to produce effective use of material, and not controlled by budget. The possibility of two outcomes? a High end limited edition and possibly a jewel case example of the album? One exploring process and the other a vehicle for the music.?

More stock! this time from Paperback. Really speedy delivery to work to, and a good selection of samples to work from for a range of different outcomes. 

I got quite a good range of really heavy stocks to use as tags/back sheets to experiment with with print, going into microns in weight which I haven't used before. Little bit of a pot-luck with some colour choices but I'm obviously happy with what I got. Good to collect sample books at this stage, so if I reach a freelance state, I have something useful to rely on.

Not sure if you can see the texture, trying to get a good photo under the light conditions of the 'cairn eco ridged' choice, Would make a really nice backing/sample to swing tags.

So heavy.

Stock/Paper Stockists - Tullis Russell

Such a good selection of stock from Tullis Russell, a useful spread of booklets and sheets to work with for one offs. The Selection taken is a range of coated and gloss stocks as reference for both my elbow brief and the Beautiful characters brief I'm working on for potential look books and swing tags.

Sample books are great for a reference, and obviously keeps everything in the same place instead of using full sheets for testers.

When I sample paper, I like to get a good selection of whats available, different textures, finishes and colour-ways for smaller experimentations in print and to see whats possible in stock from certain suppliers.

Stock/Paper Stockists - Fedrigoni

After Adam came into uni and showed off his beautiful samples from fedrigoni, I felt I needed to request some samples from the paper supplier to get a feel for the stock, and potentials for swing tags, print media and just to have as reference. the weights and colours request should be ideal for at least mockups and potential laser-cut tags I am considering. Hopefully click and zoom will demonstrate texture and weight better than the thumbnails.

When the request was made, the YCN with fedrigoni was in full swing again and I have yet to receive samples. Hopefully from a few other paper merchants, I will have something to test out (aswell as my new business cards :D I will explain in a later post..)
