Yearbook - at print (pictures!)

While another group went on a short visit to see clive at Duffield printers, heather managed to see out yearbook as printed! from a previous proof we weren't 100% happy with how the cover would turn out, and hope improvements could be made from there.. although you obviously can't tell in these photos, it is pretty exciting seeing such a big pile of your own work printed.

Good feeling.

Proofs, corrections and frustration.

One of many copies of proofs. With areas of the design signed off previously, its becoming more and more frustrating getting closer to the deadline for print with changes being made. Below are spelling mistakes and copy issues (one of atleast three) but with attempts of design changes are limiting what we can produce and the other work we have on at the moment. I think this is bothering adam the most, wanting more of a feeling of control and maybe not as calm about the situation. I'm calm we will have the publication off to print soon, just frustrating we are wasting more time changing aspects that are already signed off, so to speak.

Installation development part 2.

The original shot taken with the help of Andy, the photography tutor, and below two resolutions produced by adam and myself for a cover shot.

With two very different directions for shot, either a clear cosmetic approach or darker dramatic shot, both from the original photo. With quite a lot of discussion between both shots for the cover taking different directions, it was decided the the lighter version of the two was chosen. Although both with flaws, manipulating imagery was very time consuming and with deadlines and print looming, we would of both wanted to produce more outcomes and clear up flaws on both images and reach a better compromise. I think with only ourselves seeing the initial installation and photographic process, the lighter, sharper (possibly too sharp) manipulated image created won't make a difference from initial impact.

Additionally working on different screens and print results as shown very different outcomes can come from a single image.

YB - installation photography (friday)

After the poor attempts on thursday of the shoot for the installation, and learning that Dan Ross the photographer wouldn't be shooting the covershot, we need a rethink establish a better composition and find a better photographer. The shot angle was resolved by introducing a 17mm lens to the equation to get a very wide shot, also finding a balance of white and composition was key for a clearer shot produced. Thankfully Andy, a photography tutor was on hand to guide us through a few techniques and make the most out of what we had.

Below is one of the best raw shots we got from the session, and now something to work with for manipulation, cropping and hopefully little colour change.

YB - Meeting 6

Quite self-explanatory with how the meeting went. issues with the work in public section as always have just become a new nightmare to deal with.

Well,

We have left the meeting pretty confused about what is happening, due to students and tutors having conflicting ideas. The newly proposed section devoted to ex-students seems unnecessary and confusing for the user. These images would work as a backdrop to quotes pages, but this inclusion should have been mentioned weeks ago. We are trying to deliver the appropriate outcome that we would all be happy with but with such tight deadlines and other factors, we cannot afford to change the structure so significantly that it puts the whole project in jeopardy.

The profile and introductory spreads are now in progress, and will be delivered on time. However, the delays and confusions surrounding sections and structures ultimately means that we will be left without direction, which means these sections would have little or no context. At this point in the project it is imperative we are all on the same page.

Our deadline to have the whole book designed is the 9th May. That means we have potentially two more weeks of development before we hand it over to the printer.

We still need a significant amount of copy and images from you to complete the book.

- Acknowledgement page copy
- Quotes for 5x spreads
- Student images (To be shot on Thursday)
- Cover photography (To be shot next Tuesday)
- Outstanding copy for students profiles
- Events/ Work in public copy/images (we still need clarification on what this is going to be) (we suggest doing some sort of introduction to this section)
- All contact details for students

This is a massive list, and we are certainly worried. We cannot afford to waste any more time discussing options and page layouts this close to final hand ins, not just for this brief but for our personal work.

We will put together the final spreads for the introduction, contents and profile pages ready next week and we will send Jaclyne a PDF of what we have next Tuesday. We will continue to liaise with Jaclyne on behalf of the students to rectify the issues raised today.

YB - its coming together. Sort of.

Clarification post-easter between group.

Although with content issues in places, a good body of the book is now in order for spreads and with additional content spreads on their way and fingers crossed waiting for us when we arrive back after easter.

Installation construction should begin at the beginning of the first week back and print deadlines should be fine and with paper ordered.

Although sounds all good, I feel it won't be as plain sailing as Iam describing it to be, but only time will tell.

YB - installation shots and thoughts.

Blogged from a while ago, the letterforms cut out from interdisciplinary to get a sense of scale from the type installation. from this Dan and myself had a little scout around for location shots and art direction for the cover shot to host the installation. The shot needs enough room for the fold in the cover, but also have the presence it deserves.

Ideal situation would be in one of the working studios for the course, to have abit more of a link between the installation but it has a few pros and cons with it. Obviously it would look good in the studio, but mean that the space needs to be cleared for half a day at the end of the year close to deadlines, which I feel won't be a viable option.

An alternative which should be possible is the studio theatre. folding away seats and drawing curtains reveals a blank canvas space with very similar architecture to the studio spaces for courses. the larger space allows for better control of light, better composition and photographic options.

Confirmed from Interdisciplinary the Photographer for the installation is Dan Ross, which was also the profile photographer. In good hands and hopefully Dan (boome) and myself can talk through our ideas for the shot with him and get something really amazing.

Dan Ross' work is here, and worth a look.

YB - Easter critique.

Really good collaborative process, the crit in easter. Pin up on a large scale allowed for us to view everything as one, get a pace for the book and do a direct comparison of spreads and students. I like parts of the collaborative process like this, getting down to subtle details and making defined decisions about spreads and parts of the book.. It was good to see where we all had the same thoughts and on the same track, but also try new things to bring to the table and discuss. Although this is just a sample of the students because we are still waiting on students work.. (still!) and compatiblity issues with files and sizes. On a positive note it was good to do this sort of exercise, even though taking a few hours, worth it.

YB - Yearbook.. assemble!

I'm not even mad, I'm impressed.

Finally getting somewhere in terms of content, Initial talk at the beginning of the easter 'break' to talk about where we are at with the yearbook. As the previous mini crit between us was so successful we decided to organise something similar with new content in place, and using guidelines decided between us.

In the next meeting on friday between us, a large pin up and discussion over the majority of the book deciding on image placement and layouts. We discussed approximately 4 spread developments per student as a start should be enough to look over.

YB - clarity for print and brief.

We recently had some clarification of production so far with Joe and Lorenzo concerning design choices and stock finishes for the publications. The production of the book isn't much out of the ordinary in terms of finishing. The design doesn't have particular finishes or out of the ordinary stocks because we felt we didn't need it, we chose a satin stock in two weights (one for the cover) and a gatefold, came under budget and quite happy with results. With certain courses producing more copies and under different budgets, budgets might change a little to help other courses out, which is fair enough. Hopefully the little choices we made won't be sacrificed for a wider picture, but we will see.

Not really any issues from Joe and Lorenzo in terms of design, placement of type inside the grid for numbering and smaller titles, slight point size issues in places but apart from that quite well, content should be in soon so we can finish off spreads for students over easier.

YB - meeting 4

Potential spanner in the works from the meeting, each meeting with interdisciplinary tends to go quite well, but unfortunately has a variety of what seems to be 'guest members' to take part in discussions. Although this can be a good thing, allowing for another opinion, a fresh pair of eyes to direct the development of the book it can also suggest major chances to the publication, work that has been decided and signed off previously and potentially revisiting aspects and taking more time.

We do want to produce something that all parties are happy with, but taking control of the situation was required so we aren't running around in circles. Although changes such as titles and quotes may seem to the client small changes, can have a big effect on the rest of the space allowing for design. When certain parties have agreed/disagreed for aspects and decisions, it gets a little confusing and slightly frustrating with contradictions. Hopefully ideas are under control and we can hopefully resume.

An issue that has occasionally popped up is word count for students agreed at 50 -70 words to allow for enough space, hopefully this won't bring anymore confusion or problems later on.
